A US district court has sentenced a man to 12 years in prison for unlocking 1.9 million AT&T phones.
According to the US Department of Justice, Muhammad Fahd continued his seven-year plan to defraud the company even after learning of the investigation against him.
Judge Robert S. Lasnik ruled in Fahd’s case that he had “committed a heinous cyber crime for an extended period of time.” AT&T lost करोड 201.5 million as a result.
Fahad contacted AT&T employees via Facebook in 2012 and bribed them with “significant sums” to help them unlock customers’ phones, according to the Justice Department.
Fahad, a citizen of Pakistan and Grenada, also urged staff to recruit colleagues at the Bothel, Washington call center.
According to the department, the staff unlocked the phone for “ineligible customers” who had paid a fee to Fahad. In the spring of 2013, AT&T made it more difficult for employees to unlock IMEIs.
Fahad then hired an engineer to create the malware so that the malware would be installed on AT&T’s system and he would be able to unlock the phone more efficiently and remotely.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, staff provided Fahd with details of the company’s system and procedures for unlocking methods. The malware is said to have leaked information about the company’s system and other AT&T employees’ access certificates, which led developers to use the details to modify the malware.
According to reports, AT&T claims that Fahad and his associates unlocked 1.9 million phones through the scheme alone. Due to the unlock, customers did not complete the payment for their device, which resulted in a loss of 9 points, the company said.
Fahad was arrested in Hong Kong in 2018 on charges of embezzlement. He was extradited to the United States and convicted in September 2020 of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
